paperless

Good first things to add to paperless

Financial:

  • Bank/credit card statements
  • Tax returns + supporting docs (W-2, 1099s, receipts)
  • Pay stubs
  • Investment statements
  • Receipts for big purchases (warranty claims)
  • Insurance policies + EOBs

Legal/Identity:

  • Lease/mortgage docs
  • Car title, registration
  • Contracts you’ve signed
  • Warranty cards

Medical:

  • Explanation of benefits
  • Vaccination records
  • Medical records/test results
  • Prescriptions

Home:

  • Appliance manuals
  • Repair/service records
  • Utility bills (for tracking)
  • HOA docs

Practical tips:

  • Go back and scan everything from the last 7 years for taxes
  • Set up email ingestion for any accounts that send statements — most banks, utilities, insurance companies
  • For physical mail: scan immediately, shred the original (except truly critical originals like birth certificates)
  • Syncthing + phone scanner = frictionless capture from anywhere
